Our recent participation in the Atlanta Wine & Jazz festivals prompted the question. So what is wine’s relationship with music? Historians have been able to date drinking of wine, as far back as 13,000 years and such occasions were accompanied by music. Even the great King Solomon warned in Scripture about wine, women and song. On a different note (pardon the pun), suggestions by music historians points us that many composers used wine to stimulate their creativity. For example, Mozart regarded wine as a trusted companion for nights when the would stay up late composing songs. Similarly, Bach had two cellars in his house and would sometimes accept quality wines as payment for his services. Some viticulturists believe that musical vibrations produce a better quality of wine while it matures, namely, during the process music “can improve the exchange of oxygen in and out of the casks of wine as they rest.” Of course, there is something to be said about enjoying a glass of wine whilst listening to the Planet Suite by Gustav Holst.
In any event, whether you drink your wine whilst listening to Jazz or classical music, the experience can be one of relaxation, inspiration or peace and tranquility.
